Just had the cool experience of having my blog reported on in the Interface Mag! Kind of cool...

Anyway, if you are interested in what got me to the magazine, check out the link!

My personal goals for this year include using a range of spaces, learning styles and strategies for integrating eLearning fully into all aspects of our classroom. I am considering what it looks like to have total inclusion in planning with students, rather than planning for students’ learning on my own.
Our new class wiki is:

Room 14 Point View School Year 3/4, 2011

It's time to review the year and reflect on the personal challenges that I set!
This is what I brainstormed with Jacqui at the start of the year...IN BLACK
My reflections are in BLUE

Theme for Year: Rising to the Challenge
Term 1 : Personal Challenges
  • Digital Citizenship - this has been addressed through a huge range of ongoing activities. It separated from being one-off lessons and strategically planned scaffolded sessions to being deeply embedded in everything that we do. We have looked at netiquette closely through Edmodo and the Global Classroom networking, as well as being part of quadblogging and the Flat Stanley Project.
  • Working and relating with others (communication with others, managing self) - this has been easily and seamlessly integrated in all that we do but the big shift for me has been having new furniture and flexible spaces and groups. The class have had to really focus on managing self and collaborating.

Setting Personal Goals through the year, setting up own cyber community.

Blog is managed and written by students - the blog is still managed by the students but we set up the expectations early on and revisited them regularly.
Wiki is managed by teacher but students can add to it - although I still have my own wikis, the students now design and manage their own wikis and add to them as they see the need. Some use them independently for personal learning now.
Digital Portfolios: Some of the students will manage their own e-portfolio, others will be phased in as groups - this will continue to be a focus for next year as we build on some of the practices that we have integrated.

How are you going to prove that this classroom lifts student achievement?
Measurements
  • key competencies - difficult to measure whether the changes have been due to the eLearning or whether they would have developed regardless.
  • digital capabilities - there is a huge change that has happened throughout the year. The children have become the 'experts' and seek one another first and me next when it comes to new learning or problems.
  • change in mindset of the student where it is not them seeing the computer as being the word processing and games and fun, but as a choice of tool for looking for information - when we decided on our highlights for the year, I was almost disappointed about the class not even mentioning the iPads or laptops. But when I quizzed them on it, the response blew me away - because that's not what we learn, that's just part of HOW we learn. I figure my class know well and truly, that their personal learning is about them being independent and able to work with others, problem-solvers, problem-creators and the other stuff is the device to deliver those ideas.
  • Student engagement in the learning process - stops being the teacher led process and becomes the student led process - the students have driven more and more of the outcomes as well as the process as the year has gone on. We have moved from being 'a classroom' to 'our classroom'.
  • Children are involved in the planning, teaching and assessment - the learning has been genuinely driven by the students choices around WHAT they are interested in and curious about. This has meant a great deal of flexibility around the planning process but I have adjusted!
  • An inclusive learning environment - when we got new furniture, it was totally collaborative as to how the classroom was set up and where the spaces would be. We have moved things around often to cater for the ideas.
  • It stops being the teacher decision making for the child, and becomes the teacher asking the child: what do you need and how can I help you to get there? To be honest, there are times when I create opportunities to 'teach' because the learning is just going off all around me! :) It has meant a huge mind-shift for me into US the teachers and learners, not a 'we' and 'they' approach.
  • ipsative assessment - children layered against themselves through ongoing narrative assessment process - feedback/feedforward - where have I come from, what am I learning now, what do I need to know next? Deeply woven into the very fabric of the learning is the authentic reflective practices. The class are well equipped with HOW to reflect and the language of 'what next...'
  • Roll on 2012, I say!!!

Had a blast presenting on RSCON3! Used eluminate for the first time too!

This is the presentation I developed for the conference.

I am looking forward to presenting lots of small, bite-sized eLearning tools and skills at uLearn in October.

This is a cool video about cyber safety but I think the message is too subliminal for my own class. So...our challenge over the next few weeks is going to be to create our own...
